All about remote hiring: the latest trend in recruitment land

Remote hiring, or recruiting employees who work at a distance, is becoming more and more popular. People are working from home more often, or even from another country. How do you deal with these developments as a company, and how do they affect your organisation? Read all about it in this blog!

Does remote working suit the role?

There's no getting around it: for some roles, the concept of “remote hiring” simply doesn't fit. And we're not just talking about hairdressers, mechanics and surgeons. Because although certain “office jobs” can be done perfectly well from home or abroad, that's far from true for all of them. Think of creatives who need a real-life brainstorm for inspiration. Many colleagues also find asking questions and holding meetings easier and more natural at the office than via Teams or Zoom. Most employees also need social stimuli to stay sharp. For many people, colleagues are what make work fun! Fortunately, most people can judge well for themselves whether working from home, working remotely or working at the office suits them better.

Does remote working suit my company?

Imagine: your ideal candidate wants to work fully remotely. Think about that carefully first! Remote hiring doesn't suit every company. Social contact is really important in the workplace too. You're also more likely to lose sight of someone if he or she is never at the office. The development of employees who only work remotely is harder to gauge as well. And at the office you can keep a better eye on how someone actually spends their time, and secretly we all still like that bit of control. So consider drawing a line on how many days he or she wants to work from home, or start with one day a week at the office. Once someone sees how much fun it is at your place, they'll never want to work remotely again, right? 😉

How do I get my colleagues into the office more often?

Want to put limits on remote hiring and working from home because you hardly see your colleagues any more? Don't worry, you'll have them back at the office in no time, without strict emails or awkward conversations. Think about why someone might be absent so often and prefer to work somewhere else. Is it too noisy at the office? Point that out to others and create quiet rooms. Do you think someone doesn't feel at home enough and has too few fun contacts at the office? Then organise outings and team-building activities. Your colleagues will be looking forward to seeing each other again in no time! And how about an office dog? It's actually very logical: the nicer the (work)place, the more often employees want to come in.
