The IT world is always on the move, and so is IT recruitment. In recruitment, new trends in this industry are ‘popping up like mushrooms’. These are the most popular trends in IT recruitment in 2024.

Trend 1: AI for IT recruitment

AI has taken huge steps in recent months. In the world of recruitment, too, it has become indispensable. AI tools are used to create content and job ads, but also to automate, speed up and improve IT recruitment processes. AI tools can also be integrated into a careers page, for example, to make applying or finding information even easier. There are plenty of free AI tools to start with, but if you really want to make progress you also need to dare to invest, with money and time. AI needs time to learn. After that, you can reap the results. In IT recruitment especially this can have a huge effect: this target group is very interested in AI.

Risks of AI

The danger of AI, in IT recruitment too, is that you can easily be tempted to think AI can simply take over various tasks and duties. But remember: trust is good, checking is better. AI tools may be advanced, but they are certainly not perfect yet. Sometimes these tools “hallucinate” and make things up. AI tools such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini still sometimes miss the mark when it comes to carrying through a tone of voice. So it certainly doesn’t hurt to check your AI tool’s output!

Trend 2: Applying and working across borders

Both remote hiring and remote working are hugely popular in the IT sector. Online job interviews can almost be seen as the new normal in this industry, and working remotely is becoming more and more common too. In many cases IT staff can work from any corner of the world; programming languages such as Java and Python aren’t tied to a country or nationality. Besides the regular work, meetings can also be held online. By recruiting abroad as well, you considerably enlarge your talent pool.

Downsides of remote hiring and remote working

Unfortunately, this way of working and applying also has its downsides. In IT recruitment, the online element can form a barrier. The company culture, or indeed a candidate’s personality, may not come across entirely clearly. That’s exactly why it’s important to have a clear careers page, for example with a company video. For the same reason, preparing job interviews and researching a candidate are indispensable in remote hiring.

Trend 3: Shifting the focus to soft skills

Technical skills (hard skills) have always been crucial in the IT sector. In recruitment efforts these skills therefore always came first. Yet a shift is now becoming visible. Soft skills are becoming increasingly prominent in the recruitment of IT staff. Technical knowledge is simply no longer enough; jobs are becoming more complex, and so are the requirements. IT staff increasingly need to collaborate and solve problems. That’s why soft skills such as creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, communication skills, flexibility and problem-solving ability are indispensable these days.

Naming soft skills in vacancies

In IT recruitment, clearly naming soft skills in your vacancy can be quite a challenge. When you write a job ad, you want the required soft skills to come across the way you mean them. So avoid vague terms and state concretely what you mean, for example with examples. You can also explain why a particular soft skill is useful or in which situation it comes in handy. That way you can be sure people get a clear picture of the soft skills required, and that the right, suitable candidates apply.
