Employers step in themselves to cope with staff shortages

AMSTERDAM: Two in five (39%) employers are currently coping with staff shortages by stepping in on the shop floor themselves. A smaller group of employers goes even further: 16% are willing to take a pay cut to free up more budget for attracting and retaining employees. This is shown by research by recruitment agency Pro Contact.

Companies are pulling out all the stops to attract staff. The most successful recruitment method is their own personal network. Of those surveyed, 35% say they were able to fill open vacancies this way in the past year. Online job sites (34%) and recruitment campaigns via social media (25%) also show reasonable results.

Social media

Recruiting via social media in particular has soared in popularity. Five years ago, only 5% of Dutch people had ever applied via Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. "The advantage of recruiting via social media is that you bring your campaign to the attention of the desired target group in an attractive way," says Pro Contact director Noud Baijens. "This not only brings in lots of applicants, it also boosts your brand awareness."
